Kunimigaoka
— Takachiho's cloud-sea lookout
A lookout on a hill above the Takachiho basin, reached by road from the town. On autumn and early-winter mornings, when conditions line up, cloud settles into the valley below and only the ridges come through it.
- FromNobeoka Station
- ~1 h 15 minBus from Nobeoka, then taxi
- Get off atTakachiho Bus Center (Miyazaki Kotsu)
- From there
- Kunimigaoka
The sweet spot
This is a named, signposted viewpoint with a car park, not a find. If it feels empty, that is a matter of hour and weather. The cloud forms only around dawn under a narrow set of conditions, while most people who come to Takachiho arrive for the gorge in the middle of the day.
Where it is

- The lookout terracethe east-facing rim, and the first place cloud shows if it has formed
- The Ninigi-no-mikoto statuesa stone group of the rice-grain scene from the fog legend
- The western skylinethe five peaks of Aso, a profile people here read as a reclining figure
- The northern skylinethe Sobo range on the Oita border, with Shiiba's mountains away to the south
How to actually get there
- Nobeoka Station → Takachiho Bus Center (the Takachiho-go express, once a day each way, reserved seats, just under an hour).
- Stay the night in Takachiho — the cloud only forms around dawn.
- Takachiho Bus Center → Kunimigaoka (about 15 minutes by car; taxi, or a pickup if your lodging runs one).
- Take the east rim first, then the statues, then the western and northern skylines as the light comes up.
- Express coach from Nobeoka Station
- Nobeoka is the practical rail gateway, because Takachiho has had no railway since the local line closed. The Takachiho-go express runs once each way per day, reserved seats only, and the Nobeoka departure reaches Takachiho Bus Center in just under an hour. From the bus center the hill is about 15 minutes by car, so finish the trip in a taxi.
- Return from Takachiho Bus Center
- The Takachiho-go leaves the bus center around midday for Nobeoka and in the late afternoon for Kumamoto — one service each. That single departure sets the shape of the day, so reserve the return seat before you head up the hill in the dark.
About the place
The hill reaches 513 metres, and the lookout sits on its eastern edge, where the ground falls away into the Takachiho basin. The Gokase river crosses the basin and runs on into the gorge downstream, so the shape of the valley the town sits in is legible from a single spot. East is the drop; the other three sides are mountains. There is a car park and a toilet block and nothing else — no building, no entrance, no ticket. The hill itself is the destination, and the weather decides what it shows you.
How to enjoy it
Aim to be here before sunrise between late September and early December, after two or three clear days, when the swing between day and night temperatures has topped 15 degrees and the morning is still. Those are the conditions the tourist association gives for cloud. If the cloud does not come, the sunrise over the basin repays the early start on its own.
Background & history
Kunimi means surveying the land from a height. Local tradition places Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, said to be a grandson of Jinmu, on this hill on his way to govern Kyushu, looking out over the country he was to rule — which is where the name comes from. A second story stands here in stone: Ninigi-no-mikoto and his party, lost in thick fog after their descent, were told to scatter rice grains over the ground, and the fog lifted. The hill is also named as the birthplace of Karihoshikiri-uta, a mowing song of the Takachiho uplands.
Before you go
- Cash
- There is no charge at the lookout and no gate; the car park and the toilet block are free to use. The tourist association runs a guided sunrise trip with pickup from lodgings in town, and the price per person depends on the size of the party, so ask when you book. Carry cash — Takachiho is a small town.
- Good to know
- Whether the cloud appears depends on the night's weather and is never guaranteed. The rim is open ground with nothing to break the wind, and it is cold before dawn even in autumn. The road up is narrow and winding, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Another way
- From the Kumamoto side, the same Takachiho-go coach runs from Kumamoto Station by way of Kumamoto Airport and Takamori, reaching Takachiho Bus Center before midday. It is one service a day and needs a reservation.
- After you get off
- Takachiho Bus Center is a transfer point, not the destination. The hill stands above the town, about 15 minutes away by car; arrange a taxi at the terminal or through your lodging. There is a car park at the top, with toilets.
