Mikuni Minato
— Kitamae-bune port quarter in Sakai, Fukui
The old harbour quarter of Sakai, where the kitamae-bune coastal trade left a street of lattice-fronted merchant houses and one grand former bank. Free to walk, with a city visitor house in the middle of it.

The sweet spot
This is not a hidden place; it is a signposted heritage quarter with a city visitor house. It stays uncrowded because Sakai's famous name is Tojinbo, the sea cliffs, and most visitors reach the coast and go home without turning inland to the harbour.

About the place
Mikuni Minato sits where the Kuzuryu River meets the Sea of Japan, in the north of Sakai City. Its main lane, Kitamae-dori, is named for the kitamae-bune, the coastal cargo ships that worked the Japan Sea route. Wooden townhouses with slatted lattice fronts stand along it, and among them is the former head office of the Morita Bank, the one building on the street that was built to look like money. Sakai City keeps a visitor house here, the Mikuni Minato Machiya-kan, in a converted merchant property. A second hall, Mikuni Minato-za, sits a few doors along.
How to enjoy it
Begin at the Machiya-kan, which opens from 9:00 to 17:00 and is free, and pick up the quarter's layout before you walk. Take one of its bicycles if you want the river mouth and the harbour as well as the street, because the quarter is small but the port is not. Then walk the lane slowly on foot, since the lattice fronts and the bank facade only read at walking pace.
Background & history
Mikuni grew as a port on the Kuzuryu River mouth, handling cargo for the river system behind it and for ships working the Japan Sea coast. Through the Edo and Meiji periods the kitamae-bune trade made its merchants wealthy, and the money went into townhouses along the lane now called Kitamae-dori. When banking arrived, a local bank put its head office on the same street. The trade ended, the buildings stayed.
Before you go
- Cash
- Walking the quarter costs nothing, and the Mikuni Minato Machiya-kan is free to enter. Its bicycles are rented for an hourly charge. Carry cash for the rental and for the small shops along the street.
- Good to know
- The Machiya-kan and Mikuni Minato-za both close on Wednesdays and over the New Year period, so on a Wednesday you get the streets but not the interiors. The lanes themselves are ordinary public roads and are open at any hour.
- Another way
- By car, the quarter is roughly twenty to thirty minutes from the Kanazu interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. Sources differ on the exact figure, so allow the longer one.
- After you get off
- From Mikuni Station, walk south for five to seven minutes on flat streets. The lattice fronts start before you reach the visitor house, which is the easiest place to begin.
