About the place
Castella is a golden sponge cake baked from eggs, sugar and flour. It is the sweet Nagasaki is known for. Its name comes from Castilla, the old Spanish kingdom, as Portuguese speakers pronounced it. "Nagasaki Castella" is a registered regional brand held by the prefecture's confectioners' association. The association names one feature as the mark of the style: coarse sugar crystals left on the base of the cake. The easiest place to find it is Nagasaki Kaido Kamome Ichiba, the market inside JR Nagasaki Station. It sits directly opposite the ticket gates. Castella from several long-established makers is sold there alongside the city's other souvenirs.
How to enjoy it
Treat the market as the last stop before your train: it faces the ticket gates, so you can compare makers and buy without leaving the station. The souvenir zone opens in the morning and Kamome Yokocho stays open into the late evening, so it suits both an early purchase and a last drink before departure.
Background & history
Castella descends from sweets that came to Japan from Portugal in the 16th century. Through the Edo-period seclusion, Nagasaki stayed open as a trading port and became a major hub for imported sugar. Dejima even had its own sugar storehouses. The Nagasaki Kaido highway carried that sugar and those sweets on towards Kokura. In 2020 the route was recognised as a Japan Heritage story, the "Sugar Road", with castella listed among Nagasaki City's assets. The station market opened in 2022, a few months before the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen reached Nagasaki.
Before you go
- Cash
- Walking through the market costs nothing, and you pay counter by counter, so ask at each counter whether cards or IC are taken. Rail fares on the relay route depend on the ticket and where you book it; JR Kyushu sells some discounted tickets online.
- Good to know
- Opening hours differ between the souvenir zone, the restaurants and Kamome Yokocho, and individual shops keep their own hours, so check the market's official page before planning around a closing time. The whole market is inside the station building, so the weather does not matter.
- Another way
- Already in central Nagasaki? Take a tram to the Nagasaki Ekimae stop in front of the station, then walk over to the JR ticket gates.
- After you get off
- Come through the JR ticket gates at Nagasaki Station and the market is directly opposite. There is no street to cross.
