Sasanami-ichi Post Town

localOff the trail — and worth it

A post town halfway along the old highway between the castle town of Hagi and the Inland Sea, with red-tiled main houses on the road and stone-walled rice terraces behind them. Nationally designated as a preservation district, and still farmed.

The sweet spot

This is a designated district, not an undiscovered one — but designation here did not empty the houses. Sasanami is inland, on a road most people now bypass between Yamaguchi and Hagi, and it stayed a farming village instead of becoming a shopping street. The quiet on a weekday is the quiet of a working place.

What to look for — in walking order

  1. Former Kobayashi Residencethe old merchant house at the village entrance, where the city's marked course begins
  2. Nakanocho and Kaminochothe two stretches of old road where thatch and red Sekishu tiles run without a break
  3. Okyakuya sitewhere higher-ranking retainers on the domain road were lodged, marked on the ground
  4. Saiganji templethe temple at the far end of the village, closing the marked course
  5. The Hagi Okan itselfthe old highway where it leaves the village, a track running out between the terraces

How to actually get there

  1. Yamaguchi Station → Sasanami (Chugoku JR Bus, Bocho route toward Hagi).
  2. Sasanami bus stop → the old road through the village (walk, about three minutes).
  3. Walk the marked course from the Kobayashi house along Nakanocho and Kaminocho to Saiganji.
  4. Carry on to Hagi on a later bus, or take the same route back to Yamaguchi.
Chugoku JR Bus from Yamaguchi Station
Chugoku JR Bus runs its Bocho route north from Yamaguchi Station over the mountains toward Hagi, and Sasanami is one of the stops on it. The bus works up the valley stop by stop, so allow appreciably more than a car needs on the same road. Runs are limited through the day, so read the timetable before you build the day around it.
Onward to Hagi, or back to Yamaguchi
The same route carries on to Hagi, so you can continue rather than double back — Sasanami sits best in the middle of a Yamaguchi-to-Hagi day. Whichever direction you take, note the departure at the stop when you arrive. There is no station building and nobody to ask.

About the place

The Hagi Okan ran inland from the castle town at Hagi, over the mountains, down to Mitajiri on the Inland Sea, and Sasanami is the stop in the middle. Main houses stand along the old road under thatch and the red-brown Sekishu tiles of this region. Behind them the ground steps away into terraces held by stone walls and irrigation channels. The preservation district takes in both the street and the fields that feed it, because here the two were never separable. Hagi City marks a walking course through the village of about a kilometre.

How to enjoy it

The marked course takes about an hour walked straight through, and longer if you stop at the terraces behind the houses. Late morning is the easiest slot: the bus is thin at both ends of the day and there is nothing indoors to wait in. There is no ticket and no gate, which also means you are walking through somebody's village — keep to the road and the marked path.

Background & history

Sasanami grew as a post station in the early Edo period, laid out around the ochaya, the rest house the domain built so its lord could break the journey here. Retainers of higher rank were put up separately at the okyakuya, and that site is still marked on the ground. The same road carried the late-Edo activists of Choshu between Hagi and the coast. The land divisions set out around the rest house survive, which is why the street reads as a plan rather than a row of old houses — and it is on that basis that the district is nationally designated.

Before you go

Cash
Walking the village costs nothing. Bring cash for the bus and for anything you buy here, and arrive with money already sorted rather than expecting to find a machine.
Good to know
Nothing closes, because nothing is gated — but nothing shelters you either. The course is outdoors from end to end, and the village sits inland in the hills rather than on the milder coast.
Another way
By car Hagi City puts it at 30 minutes from central Hagi on Routes 32 and 262, or 25 minutes from central Yamaguchi on Routes 9 and 262. Coming from the north, the same bus route runs down from Hagi through Akegi to Sasanami.
After you get off
The Sasanami stop is on Route 262 at the edge of the village, and Hagi City puts it three minutes on foot from the preservation district. Turn off the highway onto the old road and the run of main houses starts straight away.
