Senagajima Umikaji Terrace
— Seaside shopping tiers on Senaga Island
A stepped street of white-walled shops and restaurants on the western slope of Senaga Island, reached from Naha Airport across a causeway. The tiers face open water, and aircraft on approach pass directly above them.

- Get off atUmikaji Terrace bus stop (Tokyo Bus, Umikaji Liner)
- From there
- Senagajima Umikaji Terrace
The sweet spot
This is a well-known day-trip stop rather than a hidden one, and it fills up around sunset. It is calmest in the late morning, soon after the shops open, while most visitors are still on the far side of the island.

How to actually get there
- Naha Airport Station → Akamine Station (Yui Rail monorail, one stop).
- Akamine Station south exit rotary → Umikaji Terrace (Tokyo Bus, Umikaji Liner TK01 / TK02).
- Walk down the tiers from the entrance level, then carry on to the shoreline road.
- On weekends and public holidays the TK04 airport shuttle runs from Naha Airport direct.
- Yui Rail to Akamine, then the Umikaji Liner
- From Naha Airport Station take the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) one stop to Akamine, the southernmost railway station in Japan. The Umikaji Liner, operated by Tokyo Bus, leaves from the rotary at the station's south exit and crosses the causeway to the terrace. Allow about 30 minutes from the airport including the transfer.
- Return via Akamine Station
- The same bus runs back to Akamine Station, where the monorail continues to Naha Airport in one direction and into the city in the other. Buses thin out after dark, so read the posted times at the terrace stop before you settle in for the sunset.
About the place
Senaga Island lies off the coast of Tomigusuku, south of Naha, and you drive or ride onto it across a causeway rather than take a boat. It measures about 1.8 kilometres around, so the shoreline road is a short loop. Umikaji Terrace occupies the western slope, where small white-plastered units are set in tiers and joined by open outdoor stairways. Shops and restaurants fill those units, and every level faces the East China Sea. Because the island stands on the extension of the airport runway, jets cross low above the tiers through the day.
How to enjoy it
Retail opens at ten in the morning and the restaurants an hour later, so a late-morning walk down the tiers puts you ahead of the crowd. The west-facing slope becomes the point of the visit at sunset. Last orders in the dining units are at 20:30 and the terrace closes at nine.
Background & history
Senaga Island was a place of prayer for the villages around it, with a worship site on the shore, and it has long been spoken of as an island of the gods. Residents were moved off before the fighting of the Pacific War, and afterwards the island was absorbed into a United States military facility and stayed closed for a generation. Once it came back into local hands it was rezoned for resort use, and a hot spring on the hilltop and the terrace on the western slope followed. Kodakara Iwa, the fertility rock lost in the war, has been rebuilt near the water.
Before you go
- Cash
- Walking the terrace is free, and the car park is free for people using it. What you spend is set by the individual shops and restaurants.
- Good to know
- The retail units close earlier in the evening than the restaurants do. The stairways and decks are open to the weather, so rain and the winds that come with an approaching typhoon make the tiers hard going.
- Another way
- From central Naha, the Senagajima Liner operated by Karry Kanko runs to the island from the Omoromachi Station and prefectural office area. By road the island is a short drive from the airport across the causeway, and parking is free for terrace visitors.
- After you get off
- The bus pulls in at the terrace itself, so there is no walk from the road. The tiers drop away below the entrance level, and the shoreline road around the island starts from the same point.
