Tatehana Wharf Morning Market
A Sunday-only market that appears on a working fishing quay in Hachinohe and is gone again before mid-morning. Stalls run in one long line beside moored boats, selling seafood, vegetables, hot food and odds and ends.

The sweet spot
This is not a hidden market. It is one of Hachinohe's best-known sights and it draws crowds. What limits it is the calendar and the clock rather than obscurity: it exists only on Sunday mornings during the season, and by the middle of the morning the quay is bare again.

How to actually get there
- Hachinohe Station → Mutsu-Minato Station (JR Hachinohe Line, about 15 minutes).
- Mutsu-Minato Station → Tatehana quay (walk about 10 minutes, east and downhill).
- Walk the row of stalls once from end to end, then double back for what you want to buy.
- If there is time, climb to Tatehana Park on the bluff above for a view over the harbour.
- JR Hachinohe Line from Hachinohe Station
- Hachinohe Station →(JR Hachinohe Line, about 15 minutes)→ Mutsu-Minato Station, then roughly a 10 minute walk downhill to the quay. Trains are sparse in the early hours of a Sunday, so check the timetable the night before rather than turning up at the station and hoping.
- Return from Mutsu-Minato Station
- Walk back up to Mutsu-Minato Station and take the JR Hachinohe Line to Hachinohe Station, or ride the Sunday market shuttle bus into the city centre instead. Because the market finishes in the morning, the return is unhurried, but the same thin early-Sunday timetable applies. Note a departure before you start shopping.
About the place
Tatehana Wharf is a working quay in the Minato district of Hachinohe, on the Pacific coast of Aomori. On Sunday mornings from spring through to the end of the year, the quay is closed to its usual traffic and lined with stalls for about 800 metres. Fishing boats stay tied up alongside, so the market runs with the harbour itself as its backdrop. Produce, seafood, plants, tools and hot food are sold side by side from tents, light trucks and folding tables. The whole thing is set up, run and taken down again before most of the city is properly awake.
How to enjoy it
Aim to be on the quay soon after first light. The market opens around dawn and begins winding down towards nine in the morning, so a late start means half of it is already packed away. Walk the row once end to end before buying anything, then come back for what you want. The lookout tower in the park above opens at a different hour in each season, so confirm it if you want the market and the view in one trip.
Background & history
Hachinohe has held street morning markets for generations, and the Minato district ran one along the sloping streets inland. In 2004 that market moved down onto the Tatehana quay, where the open concrete gave it room to stretch out. It is organised by a local morning-market cooperative rather than by a shopping street or a tourism office. The quay is part of Hachinohe's fishing harbour, so the boats moored alongside are not there as scenery.
Before you go
- Cash
- Bring cash in small notes and coins. These are individual stallholders and payment methods differ from stall to stall. There is no admission charge for the market itself.
- Good to know
- The market runs on Sundays during the season only, roughly mid-March to late December, and it is suspended on dates that clash with other local events. It is entirely outdoors on open concrete with no shelter, and the wind off the harbour stays cold well into spring.
- Another way
- From central Hachinohe, the Sunday-morning shuttle bus known as the Isaba-go runs to the Tatehana Gyoko-mae stop beside the market. Driving works too, as there is a large free parking area at the quay.
- After you get off
- From Mutsu-Minato Station, walk east and downhill towards the harbour on paved streets, about 10 minutes. The stalls begin at the near end of the quay, so there is no need to walk to the far end first.
