    Sumiyoshi Taisha's Drum Bridge

    Osaka's oldest major shrine and its famous drum bridge — free, minutes from the station.

    What to look for

    • Main torii gate — the gateway marking the entrance; the drum bridge arches over the pond a short way inside
    • The steep arch — a slope of roughly 48 degrees that makes the short crossing surprisingly dramatic
    • Drum-shaped reflection — on calm sunny days, the vermilion arch and its mirror image in the pond form a circle

    Hozenji Yokocho

    A lantern-lit stone lane one street behind Dotonbori, with a Fudo statue so watered by visitors that it is entirely green — burned twice, rebuilt twice.

    What to look for

    • Mizukake Fudo — the Fudo Myoo statue so thickly mossed that no stone is visible, the result of water ladled over it by visitors for generations
    • The stone lane itself — flagstones, lanterns and wooden shopfronts, wide enough for two people, immediately behind Dotonbori's neon
    • The literary connection — the setting of Oda Sakunosuke's Meoto Zenzai — the books that gave the lane its name in the public mind

    Tsutenkaku

    Osaka's retro landmark in a genuine shitamachi (old downtown) neighbourhood — the Billiken and kushikatsu culture are found nowhere else.

    What to look for

    • Shinsekai arcades — the covered shopping streets surrounding the tower base, lined with kushikatsu restaurants and game parlours
    • Tower exterior — the 103-metre lattice-steel structure; best viewed from the Jan-Jan Yokocho alley to the south
    • Observation deck (91 m) — open-air views over southern Osaka; weather forecast displayed via coloured LEDs at the tower tip

    The Glico Sign at Dotonbori

    Osaka's most famous sign, quiet and easy to photograph in the early morning.

    What to look for

    • Ebisubashi Bridge — the bridge facing the sign directly — the classic photo position
    • Canal-side promenade — the walkway below the bridge for an upward angle on the sign
    • The sixth-generation sign — LED panel replacing earlier neon versions in 2014, lit from ~30 min after sunset to midnight
