Omicho Market

foodThe classic — done right

A covered market in the middle of Kanazawa, where fishmongers, greengrocers, butchers and souvenir counters share one roof. Locals shop the same aisles that visitors walk, and some of the eating places inside open before the shops do.

How to actually get there

  1. Kanazawa Station east exit → Musashigatsuji / Omicho Market (clockwise Kanazawa Loop Bus, the first stop).
  2. Get off, cross the junction and go in through the covered entrance on the corner.
  3. Walk the fish lanes first, then double back to the eating alley before the lunch queues build.
Kanazawa Loop Bus from the station east exit
Kanazawa Station (east exit) → Musashigatsuji / Omicho Market. It is the first stop on the clockwise Kanazawa Loop Bus. Fare 220 yen for adults, 110 yen for primary-school children; a one-day pass is 800 yen. On foot the same trip takes 12 to 15 minutes on flat streets.
Back to Kanazawa Station
Buses for Kanazawa Station leave from the far side of the same street. The clockwise loop runs roughly 8:30 to 18:00, so later in the evening take a local Hokutetsu bus or walk back.

About the place

Omicho sits at Musashigatsuji, the junction where Kanazawa's main avenues meet. Around 170 shops fill the covered lanes — crab and shrimp on ice, Kaga vegetables, butchers, picklers, dried goods. It is not one hall but a block of connected arcades, with the newer Omicho Ichiba-kan building on the corner and older passages branching off beside it. The eating places are folded into the same block rather than lined up outside it, so a seafood bowl is eaten a few metres from where the fish was sold. Kanazawa still calls this its kitchen, and the place still works as one.

How to enjoy it

Shops generally open around 9am, and a few of the eating places inside start as early as 7am — an early seafood bowl, before the aisles fill, is the calmest version of this place. Some shops close on Wednesdays and Sundays in step with the central wholesale market, so a weekday morning that avoids those two days gives you the market at its fullest.

Background & history

The market dates to 1721, when a fish market from the Sai River side of town was brought together with Omicho. It has fed the castle town ever since, and the name — the kitchen of Kanazawa — comes from that continuity rather than from any campaign. On the Musashigatsuji corner a newer block, Omicho Ichiba-kan, was added, with shops below and restaurants above. The older arcades beside it kept their narrow width and low roof.

Before you go

Cash
Entering the market costs nothing. Buses take IC cards, contactless credit cards and cash. Each shop sets its own payment methods, so it is worth carrying cash as well as a card.
Good to know
Hours and rest days are set shop by shop, and not every counter is open every day. The lanes are roofed, so rain is not a problem, but trading winds down through the late afternoon — this is not an evening destination.
Another way
Local Hokutetsu buses from stands 6 to 9 at the station east exit also stop at Musashigatsuji. Walking, head southeast from the station along the main road and the covered entrances appear at the junction.
After you get off
The Musashigatsuji / Omicho Market stop is at the intersection itself, with market entrances on the corners around it. Step under the roof and you are already inside.
