Tokachigawa Onsen

onsenOff the trail — and worth it

A hot-spring district on the Tokachi plain whose water is filtered through peat rather than rock. Its public front door is a michi-no-eki, where a swimsuit bath, a free footbath and a farm market sit under one roof.

The sweet spot

Tokachigawa is a working onsen town with full hotels along the river, and nobody would call it undiscovered. What thins the traffic at the michi-no-eki is the bus sheet: eight runs a day on weekdays, with gaps of two hours or more between some of them. The quiet stretches are simply the ones between services, and they are printed in advance.

  1. Obihiro Station bus terminal → Garden Spa Tokachigawa Onsen (Tokachi Bus route 45).
  2. Footbath first, outside the hall, free and open to anyone.
  3. Inside for the marché, the craft studio and the swimsuit bathing zone.
  4. Walk up to Tokachi-ga-oka Park for the flower clock and the plain.
Tokachi Bus route 45 from Obihiro Station
Route 45, the Tokachigawa Onsen line, leaves the bus terminal in front of Obihiro Station and reaches the stop named Garden Spa Tokachigawa Onsen twenty-eight minutes later. The operator's weekday sheet lists eight departures spread across the day. The line uses more than one stand at the terminal, so check the board rather than the queue.
Back to Obihiro Station
The same line runs the other way from the stop outside the building, and the last departures leave the onsen in the early evening. Because the gaps between services are long, fix your return before you get into the water rather than after.

About the place

Tokachigawa Onsen draws its water up through a buried bed of lignite, the pressed remains of reeds and other plants that once grew on this floodplain. What comes out is a clear brown alkaline water carrying humic matter, and the Japanese name for it, moor spring, is borrowed from the German word for peat bog. The source rises from between five hundred and seven hundred metres down at fifty-five to sixty degrees, hot enough to reach the baths without help. Hokkaido has entered the water on its own heritage list. The public way in is Garden Spa, owned by the town of Otofuke, where you bathe in a swimsuit rather than undressed.

How to enjoy it

Take a weekday departure at 08:50 or 11:20 from the Obihiro terminal and you are at the door before the middle of the day. The hall opens at nine, and from Friday to Sunday in the warm half of the year it stays open into the evening, which is the window in which the outdoor pools earn the journey. Walk up to Tokachi-ga-oka afterwards for the flower clock, then take the same route back.

Background & history

The complex on prefectural route 73 opened in December 2016, built by the town of Otofuke together with the Tokachigawa Onsen inn co-operative. In July 2020 the transport ministry entered it in the national michi-no-eki register, and it reopened under that longer name later the same month. Ownership stayed with the town and day-to-day running with the co-operative, which is why a bathhouse here behaves like a public facility. The water itself had already been listed among Hokkaido's heritage assets.

Before you go

Cash
The footbath outside is free to anyone passing. Bathing in the pools is charged at the desk and the rate is not published on the official pages, so ask on arrival and carry cash as well as a card for the market hall.
Good to know
The hall shuts on the second Tuesday of the month from May to October, moved to the fourth Tuesday in August, and on every Tuesday from November to April, plus New Year's Day. Winter closing is seven in the evening; between May and October it runs to nine on Fridays, weekends and holidays.
Another way
By car the nearest exit is Otofuke-Obihiro on the Doto Expressway. Arriving by air, take the connecting bus from Tokachi-Obihiro Airport to Obihiro Station and pick up route 45 there.
After you get off
The stop stands on prefectural route 73 directly outside the building, and the entrance is a few paces from the shelter. The onsen hotels run on south along the same road.
