Uwajima Taimeshi
— Raw sea bream and egg over rice, in southern Ehime
Southern Ehime's version of sea bream rice is not cooked. Sashimi is stirred into a soy-and-egg sauce and poured over hot rice. The pin here is the michi-no-eki beside Uwajima's port, where a food court serves it.

The sweet spot
This is not an obscure dish; both the prefecture and the agriculture ministry document it. What travellers get wrong is which one arrives. Ask for taimeshi in Matsuyama and the cooked version may come — the same name, a different plate. Uwajima is where the raw form is the default, and the michi-no-eki is the least demanding place to meet it.

How to actually get there
- Matsuyama Station → Uwajima Station (JR limited express Uwakai, about 1 hour 20-30 minutes, terminus).
- Uwajima Station → Kisaiya Hiroba michi-no-eki (walk southwest toward Uwajima Port, or take a taxi or local bus).
- Work through the market floor and the display halls to the food court at the back, where the raw taimeshi is served.
- Limited express Uwakai from Matsuyama
- The Uwakai runs down the JR Yosan Line from Matsuyama to Uwajima, which is the end of the line. Ehime's official travel guide gives about 1 hour 20 minutes and other timetable records about 1 hour 30, so allow the wider figure. Most Uwakai services connect at Matsuyama with the Shiokaze and Ishizuchi expresses from Okayama and Takamatsu, so the journey can be booked through.
- Return from Uwajima Station
- Uwajima is a terminus, so return trains start from the platform there rather than passing through. Departures thin out through the evening, so check the board before settling in for a long lunch, and allow margin if you need the Matsuyama connection for Okayama or Takamatsu.
About the place
Ehime does not have one sea bream rice dish, and the split runs along the prefecture. Around Matsuyama the fish is cooked whole in the pot and the flesh flaked back through the rice. In the south, the Nanyo region where Uwajima sits, it is never cooked. Raw slices are steeped in a sauce built on soy sauce with egg, sesame and dashi, then tipped over hot rice with chopped condiments. The prefecture's own tourism site and the agriculture ministry's regional-cuisine database file the two forms separately rather than as variants of one recipe.
How to enjoy it
Go at lunch. The market hall keeps shop hours through the day, but the food court runs a shorter window — 10:30 to 16:30 with last orders at 16:00, as listed by the michi-no-eki and by the prefecture's tourism site when checked. A mid-afternoon arrival still works; an early-evening one does not. Eat first, then shop, so a slow browse cannot cost you the meal.
Background & history
The dish belongs to the Uwa Sea before it belongs to any restaurant. The agriculture ministry's regional-cuisine database records the southern form as something fishermen could assemble on the boat — cut fish folded into a prepared sauce rather than cooked — and the prefecture files it the same way, as a fisherman's dish. That constraint is still legible in the finished bowl: nothing in it needs heat except the rice. Sea bream itself carries older weight as a celebratory fish, which is why the ministry notes it is eaten year round but turns up most at celebrations.
Before you go
- Cash
- The food court works from a ticket machine and takes no seat reservations, so tables are first come. Neither the michi-no-eki nor the prefecture's tourism page lists an admission charge for the building or its display halls. The official site notes it operates as a tax-free shop, so carry a passport if you plan to buy pearls or preserved goods.
- Good to know
- The shopping floor is listed at 9:00 to 18:00 and the outdoor toilets are open around the clock. The trap is that the food court shuts well before the shops do, so the building can still be busy long after the taimeshi counter has closed.
- Another way
- By road it sits immediately below the Uwajima Asahi interchange on the Uwajima expressway; Ehime's official travel guide gives about an hour and a half by car from Matsuyama. Parking is free and large enough for coaches.
- After you get off
- From Uwajima Station, walk southwest through the town centre toward the harbour. The michi-no-eki stands near Uwajima Port, and taxis and local buses cover the same short hop if you would rather not walk it.
