How to actually get there
- Kagoshima-Chuo Station east exit, bus stand 16, to Bukeyashiki-iriguchi on the Chiran bus (about 75 minutes).
- Walk two minutes to the main lane, buy the garden ticket at the office on the street, and follow the bend past the seven gardens.
- Rejoin the same bus line three stops on to Tokko-Kannon-iriguchi, then walk about five minutes to the Chiran Peace Museum.
- Return on the same line to Kagoshima-Chuo, checking the last departure before you settle into the museum.
- Kagoshima Kotsu bus for Chiran
- Leave Kagoshima-Chuo Station by the Sakurajima-guchi east exit and find bus stand 16 outside the building on the left. The Chiran bus reaches Bukeyashiki-iriguchi in about 75 minutes and runs eight times a day in each direction, on the same schedule at weekends. It carries on to the Peace Museum stop afterwards, so one line covers both halves of the visit.
- Back from Bukeyashiki-iriguchi
- The same line returns to Kagoshima-Chuo in about the same time, with eight departures spread across the day. The last one leaves Bukeyashiki-iriguchi at 18:43 according to the timetable current when this was checked. Miss it and there is no later service, so fix the return before you start walking.
About the place
Chiran sits inland on the southern Satsuma Peninsula, backed by the hill of Hahagatake. Its old quarter is a fumoto — a samurai settlement of the kind Satsuma domain scattered across its territory rather than concentrating its warriors in the castle town. The main lane bends rather than running straight, and along it stone walls carry hedges clipped flat and square, with gates opening onto private gardens behind. Hahagatake is drawn into those gardens as borrowed scenery, so the same hill appears again and again from different angles as you walk. Kagoshima calls the place its little Kyoto.
How to enjoy it
Both sites keep the same hours, so a single afternoon covers them if the bus cooperates: arrive at the lanes first, then move on to the museum, since the museum stops admitting visitors half an hour before it closes. Walk the lane in both directions rather than once — the hedges hide the gardens from one side and open them from the other. Leave the museum time it deserves; it is not a fifteen-minute stop.
Background & history
Satsuma domain governed by dividing its land into outlying districts and building a fumoto, a samurai settlement, around each lord's residence rather than gathering its warriors in one castle town. Chiran was one of these, and the lane pattern that survives dates from the time of Shimazu Hisamine, the eighteenth lord of Chiran, in the seventeen hundreds. The district is now a nationally designated preservation area for traditional buildings, and seven of its gardens carry the country's Place of Scenic Beauty designation. In the closing months of the Second World War the army airfield on the edge of the same town became a departure point for kamikaze sorties against the Okinawa campaign.
Before you go
- Cash
- Entry to the seven gardens was 530 yen for adults when checked, and the Peace Museum 500 yen; the two are separate tickets. The bus fare from Kagoshima-Chuo to the Peace Museum stop was listed at 1,310 yen, and 210 yen for the short hop between the two Chiran stops. Carry cash for the bus.
- Good to know
- Both the gardens and the museum are open every day of the year at last check, the gardens from 9:00 and the museum until 17:00 with last entry at 16:30. The lanes are unlit after dark and the bus service is sparse, so the closing times matter less than the timetable does.
- Another way
- A separate Kagoshima Kotsu route links Ibusuki with Chiran, covered in the same Minamikyushu City timetable, so the sand baths and the samurai lanes can be combined in one day without returning to Kagoshima city. By car it is roughly 45 minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo, or about 15 minutes from the Chiran interchange on the Ibusuki Skyline.
- After you get off
- From the Bukeyashiki-iriguchi stop the preserved street begins a couple of minutes away on foot, uphill and inland from the main road. The ticket office for the gardens sits along the lane itself rather than at a gate.
