Sengan-en

— The Shimazu lords' garden with Sakurajima borrowed in

historyThe classic — done right

A daimyo garden on the shore of Kagoshima Bay, laid out so that the volcano across the water reads as its hill and the bay as its pond. Inside the same grounds stand the ruins of an early modern Japanese ironworks.

  4. Neko-gami Shrinea shrine dedicated to cats, listed by the prefecture as a sight in its own right
  5. Shoko Shuseikanthe museum next door covering the Shimazu family and the Satsuma industrial works

How to actually get there

  1. Kagoshima-Chuo Station to Senganen-mae on the Kagoshima City View loop bus (about 50 minutes).
  2. Enter at the main gate and take the furnace ruins first, while you are still at road level.
  3. Work up through the residence and the winding-stream garden to the higher paths, where the volcano sits square in the frame.
  4. Finish next door at the Shoko Shuseikan, which the same ticket covers, then pick up the bus or a train from the same spot.
Kagoshima City View loop bus from Kagoshima-Chuo
The city's sightseeing loop bus, the Kagoshima City View, runs from Kagoshima-Chuo Station to the Senganen-mae stop in about 50 minutes, and the stop is at the entrance. It is a loop rather than a direct service, so that time includes the circuit through the city centre — treat it as sightseeing on the way rather than dead travel.
Back from Senganen-mae
The same loop carries on round to Kagoshima-Chuo. If the timing happens to suit, JR from Senganen Station is much quicker, but it is an unstaffed single-platform stop with limited services, so read the board before you commit to it.

About the place

Sengan-en covers about five hectares of the Iso coast north of central Kagoshima, and it is built around a view rather than around a pond. Sakurajima, the active volcano across the water, is treated as the garden's artificial hill; Kinko Bay is treated as its water. The Shimazu family, who ruled Satsuma, kept the place first as a seaside villa and later made it their main residence, and its buildings, shrine and stone lanterns accumulated over generations. In the nineteenth century the same ground took on a second life as an industrial site, which is why a furnace ruin sits among the planting.

How to enjoy it

The garden opens at 9:00 and closes at 17:00. Give it longer than a photo stop, because the furnace ruins and the Shuseikan are inside the same ticket and the upper paths are what put Sakurajima where the design intends it. The garden faces east across the bay, so the volcano is lit from the front in the morning and backlit later in the day.

Background & history

Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the nineteenth head of the family, laid the garden out in 1658 as a seaside villa. Later lords added to it. Nariakira, the twenty-eighth head, was especially attached to the place and received guests here, among them Atsuhime and visitors from overseas. He also built a factory complex beside the garden and a reverberatory furnace within it, working from Dutch technical manuals. That industrial ground was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015 as part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.

Before you go

Cash
General admission was 1,600 yen when checked, and one ticket covers the garden, the Iso Residence and the Shoko Shuseikan together. Parking on site is paid. Buy at the gate.
Good to know
Open every day of the year except the first Sunday in March, when the Kagoshima Marathon route closes it. Much of the walking is on slopes and stone steps, and the upper paths have no cover, so a hot afternoon is felt.
Another way
JR Senganen Station on the Nippo Main Line sits on the entrance side of the garden, one stop out from Kagoshima Station. It is unstaffed with a single platform and some morning services run straight through, so treat it as a bonus rather than the plan. By car it is about 20 minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo.
After you get off
The Senganen-mae bus stop and Senganen Station sit together on Route 10, on the seaward side of the garden. The main gate is a few steps up from the road and the ticket window is just inside it.
