Kawachi Fujien Wisteria Garden
A private wisteria garden in a valley behind Kitakyushu, open only in the weeks its flowers are out. Two long flower tunnels lead to a walk-in dome and a broad trellis field, and the busiest spring weeks need an advance dated ticket.

The sweet spot
This is not a hidden garden. It is known well enough that the spring peak runs on dated, time-slotted tickets sold in advance rather than at the gate. What is genuinely limited is the calendar: the gate opens only for the few weeks the wisteria or the maples are out, and stays closed the rest of the year.

How to actually get there
- Kokura Station → Yahata Station (JR Kagoshima Main Line, a few stops west).
- Yahata Station → Kawachi Fujien (taxi, about 20 minutes up the valley past the Kawachi reservoir).
- In the peak spring weeks, have the dated entry ticket in hand before you travel — it is sold in advance, not at the gate.
- Walk the two flower tunnels, then the dome, then the great trellis, and arrange the return car before you finish.
- JR to Yahata, then a taxi
- Kokura Station → Yahata Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line, a few stops west. From Yahata Station the garden is about 20 minutes by taxi. No bus route runs up to the valley, so the taxi leg is not optional. The Kagoshima Main Line is the trunk route through Kitakyushu, so the rail half is easy to fit anywhere in the day.
- Fix the return car before you go in
- There is no bus stop at the garden. Agree a pickup time with the driver who brings you, or note the number of a Yahata taxi company before you set off. From Yahata Station the JR Kagoshima Main Line runs back toward Kokura in one direction and toward Hakata in the other.
About the place
Kawachi Fujien lies in Yahata-Higashi ward of Kitakyushu, on a wooded slope past the Kawachi reservoir. The grounds run to about 3,000 tsubo, roughly a hectare, and hold 22 named varieties of wisteria — Noda-naga with its long trailing racemes, the pink-tipped kuchibeni, doubles and short-clustered kinds among them. Maples were planted in among the trellises, and they are the reason the garden opens a second time later in the year. It is not a municipal park. The calendar is set by the flowers, and the owner announces it season by season.
How to enjoy it
The route runs one way: the two tunnels first, then the dome, then the great trellis at the end. In the peak spring weeks the ticket names your entry window, so take the earliest slot you can get and let the crowd build behind you. In late autumn the same paths are walked for the maples instead, on a shorter and quieter calendar.
Background & history
The garden opened in April 1977, laid out by a private owner rather than by the city. Wisteria trained overhead into tunnels became the image the place is known by, and tickets for the spring weeks are now sold both through Japanese convenience stores and through a booking site aimed at overseas visitors. The maples planted around the trellises grew in, and the garden began opening a second time for their colour. That is how the present two-season calendar took shape.
Before you go
- Cash
- Admission is charged and the rate moves with how far the wisteria has opened, so the figure is posted by the garden for the day rather than fixed. In the busiest spring weeks entry is by a dated, time-slotted ticket bought beforehand at a convenience store, not at the gate. Check the official pages for the season's dates, rate and ticket method before you travel.
- Good to know
- The gate opens only for the wisteria in spring and the maples in late autumn, and the garden is closed between those windows; the dates are announced each year on the official site. The approach road passes the Kawachi reservoir and has tight curves and narrow stretches, which the official access page says plainly.
- Another way
- By car it is about 20 minutes from either the Otani or the Sanji exit of the Kitakyushu Urban Expressway, following the road past the Kawachi reservoir. The garden keeps a free car park of about 200 spaces.
- After you get off
- Yahata Station sits on the JR Kagoshima Main Line and the taxi rank is outside it. There is no walking route to the garden — the taxi climbs the valley road past the reservoir and sets you down at the entrance.
