Kokura Castle & Tanga Market
A reconstructed keep whose top floor overhangs the one beneath it, and, a short walk east, the covered market that Kitakyushu calls its kitchen. Two halves of the same town on one flat walk.

The sweet spot
Neither of these is hidden. The keep is the city's postcard and the market is on every local list. What gets skipped is Kitakyushu itself: most travellers change at Kokura and carry on to Hakata. The pairing is the reason to stop — a castle and a market that is still trading, in a town that is not being visited for either of them.
Where it is

- The keep from the moatthe black and white tower on its stone base, best read from the water on the north side
- The top storey of the towerthe floor that projects beyond the one below, with no gables in the roofline
- Kokura Castle Gardena walled garden and a shoin building on the east side of the grounds
- The Tanga arcadea narrow covered lane of fish, vegetables, meat and prepared food
- Tanga Aozora Marketthe open-air block built alongside after the fires, now part of the same run of stalls
How to actually get there
- Kokura Station → Nishi-Kokura, one stop on the Kagoshima Main Line.
- Walk south to the moat, into the grounds, and up to the keep.
- Cross the grounds east to Kokura Castle Garden.
- Walk east through the town centre to the Tanga arcade and the open-air block beside it.
- One stop west of Kokura Station
- Nishi-Kokura is the next station along the Kagoshima Main Line and the castle is a short walk south of it. If you would rather not wait for a train, the walk from Kokura Station covers the same ground in about a quarter of an hour, straight through the town centre.
- Back to Kokura Station
- From the market Kokura Station is a walk north, or two stops on the monorail from Tanga. Kokura is a Shinkansen stop, so onward trains to Hakata and across to Honshu run late — the market is the part of the walk that shuts first.
About the place
The tower at Kokura is built in the style called karazukuri: the upper storey is wider than the one beneath and projects out over it, and there are no decorative gables breaking the roofline. The result reads as heavier at the top than at the bottom, which is the reverse of almost every other castle in Japan. Walk east across the town centre and the ground drops into Tanga Market, a covered lane of fish, vegetables, meat and prepared food that Kitakyushu calls its kitchen. The two sit at either end of a flat walk, and doing them in one go is the whole argument for getting off the train here.
How to enjoy it
The castle publishes hours of 9:00 to 20:00, which is late for a keep and makes an evening visit possible; the market keeps shop hours and is fullest in the morning. Do the market first if you want it busy, the castle first if you want the tower quiet. One way of eating belongs to the market as a whole rather than to any single stall: buy a bowl of plain rice, carry it from counter to counter, and have each one put what you point at on top.
Background & history
Hosokawa Tadaoki rebuilt the castle at the start of the seventeenth century and gave it the overhanging tower. It burned in 1837, and again in 1866, when the domain set fire to its own castle rather than lose it in the war with Choshu; nothing of the keep survived. What stands now went up in 1959 in reinforced concrete. The market across town is younger and has no founding date: it grew in the Taisho era out of a landing place on the creek where fish were brought ashore.
Before you go
- Cash
- The keep is ticketed and the garden is charged separately, with rates published on the castle's own site; the grounds and the moat path outside are free to walk. The market is a place to have cash on you, because acceptance varies stall by stall.
- Good to know
- The castle's opening hours shift with the season and with events, so read its calendar before fixing an evening. The market is rebuilding in stages after two fires in 2022, which means the layout changes from year to year and some lanes are hoarding rather than shops; the open-air block alongside carries the trade meanwhile.
- Another way
- Starting from the market instead is easy: take the Kitakyushu monorail one stop from Kokura Station to Tanga, walk the arcade first, and finish at the castle rather than beginning there. Same route, reversed, and it suits a morning when you want the stalls at their fullest.
- After you get off
- Nishi-Kokura sits off the north-west corner of the castle grounds. Come out on the south side, cross the road, and the moat and the stone base are in front of you with the tower in sight the whole way. From the castle the market is a flat walk east through the town centre.
