Iwamatsu Historic Townscape
— Uwajima's newest preservation district by the river
A merchant street of two-storey townhouses at the mouth of the Iwamatsu River, south of Uwajima. It was added to Japan's list of preservation districts recently, and it is still a working town rather than a restored one.

The sweet spot
This is less a hidden town than a late-recognised one. The designation arrived only a few years ago and the visitor infrastructure has not followed: no ticket gate, no visitor centre, almost nothing in English. What that buys is an ordinary street at an ordinary hour. What it costs is that most doors stay shut.

How to actually get there
- Uwajima → Iwamatsu (Uwajima Jidosha bus toward Jokei or Sukumo).
- Iwamatsu terminal → the old street (about 3 minutes on foot).
- Walk down the street to the Konishi main house and the river frontage.
- Back up to the terminal, having checked the northbound departure in advance.
- Uwajima to Iwamatsu by Uwajima Jidosha bus
- Uwajima Jidosha runs buses south from Uwajima along Route 56 toward Jokei and Sukumo, and they call at the Iwamatsu terminal. Departures are spread thinly through the day rather than frequent, so check the operator's timetable before travelling. From the terminal the preservation district begins about three minutes on foot.
- Back from Iwamatsu to Uwajima
- The same buses return north to Uwajima from the terminal, which is also the operator's local depot. Services thin out in the evening and there is no railway in this valley, so note the last northbound departure when you arrive rather than when you want to leave.
About the place
Iwamatsu sits where the Iwamatsu River meets the ria coast of southern Ehime, and the town grew inward from farming into the collecting point for everything the surrounding valleys produced. Trade in rice, timber and salt paid for the street, and sake brewing followed it. The plots are narrow at the front and deep behind, so the houses run back a long way from the frontage, and stone-faced water channels thread between them down toward the river. Uwajima City describes the value as the ensemble rather than any one facade: the townhouses, the channels, the river and the steep wooded slopes behind it, read together.
How to enjoy it
A weekday morning suits it, when the shops are open and the street is in use; a living town has less to show on a quiet weekend. Getting inside the Konishi main house takes planning, since the city asks for applications about two weeks ahead and the visit itself runs about twenty minutes. Everything else is looked at from the street, so daylight and comfortable shoes are the whole requirement.
Background & history
Iwamatsu turned from farming to trade in the late Edo period and kept growing on commerce into the modern era. The Konishi family, enriched by land reclamation, salt and the rice and timber trades, anchored the town's economy until the war; their main house survives together with a detached room glazed in coloured glass, restored with support from the World Monuments Fund and the Freeman Foundation. Japan designated the street an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings on 15 December 2023.
Before you go
- Cash
- Walking the street costs nothing. The Konishi main house is opened by prior application through Uwajima City's cultural properties section rather than by a ticket at the door. There are shops near the highway, but carry cash for anything in the old street.
- Good to know
- This is a residential street, so the houses are private unless a door is signed otherwise, and photographs of interiors and of residents are not welcome. The lanes are narrow, with open water channels along the edges and no pavement.
- Another way
- By car the district sits on Route 56 between Uwajima and Sukumo, with the Tsushima-Iwamatsu interchange on the Matsuyama Expressway close by. A small free car park at the top of the street holds about seven vehicles.
- After you get off
- From the Iwamatsu terminal, walk about three minutes off Route 56 and down into the old street; the district runs from there along the bank of the Iwamatsu River.
