Mifuneyama Rakuen

— A daimyo's cliffside stroll garden in Takeo

natureThe classic — done right

A stroll garden at the foot of Mount Mifune in Takeo, laid out by a domain lord so that the mountain's sheer rock face serves as the garden's back wall. A pond circuit at the bottom, an azalea valley pressed up against the cliff.

How to actually get there

  1. Takeo-Onsen Station → the south exit, the Mifuneyama gate, which faces the garden's side of town.
  2. South exit → JR Kyushu bus toward the Ureshino Onsen bus centre, getting off at Mifuneyama Rakuen.
  3. Bus stop → the garden gate, then the pond circuit and on toward the cliff.
  4. Azalea valley → Gohyaku Rakan, then back down to the gate the way you came.
JR Kyushu bus from Takeo-Onsen Station
Leave Takeo-Onsen Station by the south exit, named the Mifuneyama gate, and take the JR Kyushu bus bound for the Ureshino Onsen bus centre, getting off at the Mifuneyama Rakuen stop. The same distance is about thirty minutes on foot along the main road, or a short taxi ride.
Return to Takeo-Onsen Station
The same route runs back toward the station from the stop outside the garden. Buses follow a timetable rather than turning up constantly, so note the return times on the pole when you arrive; if the gap is long, the road back to the station is flat the whole way.

About the place

Mifuneyama Rakuen covers some 150,000 tsubo, roughly fifty hectares, on the side of Mount Mifune where the hill breaks off into bare rock. The design is a stroll garden: a pond at the centre, a path around it, and views composed to arrive one at a time as you walk. What makes it unusual is the distance of the borrowed scenery. Most Japanese gardens borrow a hill on the horizon, but here the cliff stands immediately above the planting, so rock and flowers land in the same frame. The grounds are privately run and share their land with a hotel, though the circuit itself is a garden walk.

How to enjoy it

The garden opens at 8:00 and closes at 17:00, early enough that the first hour belongs to whoever turned up for it. Cherry comes first in spring, then azalea and wisteria together, hydrangea in early summer and maples late in the year; the cliff is there whichever one you catch.

Background & history

The site began as Haginoo-en, a villa garden belonging to the Takeo branch of the Nabeshima house. The Takeo lord Nabeshima Shigeyoshi had it rebuilt as a full stroll garden, finished in 1845. He treated the cliff as the one element that could not be moved and planted everything else against it. The grounds are now listed as a nationally registered monument, a designation that covers the garden as a whole rather than any single feature.

Before you go

Cash
Admission is charged at the gate and the rate moves with the season, with the ordinary adult rate listed at 500 yen. Bus fare is separate.
Good to know
The garden keeps daytime hours through the year, and the paths near the cliff are uneven and turn slippery after rain. In summer the grounds also host an evening digital-art exhibition, whose opening hours and tickets are set separately from the daytime garden.
Another way
Coming from Nagasaki or Sasebo, Takeo-Onsen is on the Sasebo Line and the same Ureshino bus works in either direction. By car, the garden is about ten minutes from the Takeo-Kitakata interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway and has its own car park.
After you get off
From the Mifuneyama Rakuen bus stop, the gate is right there on the garden side of the road. Walking from the station instead, follow the main road south with the cliff in view the whole way.
