Minna Island
— The crescent island off the Motobu peninsula
A crescent-shaped island off the Motobu peninsula, close enough that the crossing is over almost as soon as it starts. Coral sand on the west side, a small resident village behind it, and a lighthouse at the far end.

The sweet spot
Minna is no secret — the town's tourism association promotes it and the boats run all day in season. What keeps it manageable is its size and the schedule: there is no bridge, the crossing is short but fixed, and by evening the day visitors have gone and the island belongs to the households again.

How to actually get there
- Nago or the Motobu peninsula road → Toguchi Port, in the centre of Motobu town.
- Toguchi Port → Minna Port (Minna Kaiun high-speed boat; about a quarter of an hour).
- From the quay, walk through the village lanes and out to the west-facing beach.
- Follow the south shore, then the eastern tip for the lighthouse, and return in time for the last boat.
- Minna Kaiun high-speed boat from Toguchi Port
- The boat New Wing Minna runs from Toguchi Port, in the centre of Motobu town, to Minna Port. The crossing takes about a quarter of an hour. Departure times can change with the state of the sea on the day, and in strong wind every sailing is cancelled, so check before you drive to the port.
- Back on the last boat
- There is no bridge and no evening service, so the final departure decides how long you stay. Watch the posted times at the quay rather than trusting a printed schedule, because sea conditions move them. If wind is forecast, cross early and come back early rather than risking a cancelled return.
About the place
Minna lies off the northwest side of the Motobu peninsula, a thin curve of land that reads as a crescent from the water and as a croissant from the air, which is where its nickname comes from. The high-speed boat New Wing Minna works the route from Toguchi Port in the middle of Motobu town. On the west side is the beach the island is known for, coral sand shelving into clear water; behind it stand the houses, the lanes and a combined primary and junior high school. A lighthouse marks the eastern end. The island is small enough to walk around, and it holds two lives at once: a working settlement, and a beach that fills and empties with the timetable.
How to enjoy it
Cross on one of the morning departures and keep the last boat of the day in mind from the moment you land — everything else on the island fits inside that window. Walk the crescent first while the light is low and the sand still cool, then swim; the west beach faces the afternoon sun, and shade is scarce. Remember that the lanes behind the beach are a village, not a resort, and keep noise and gear off them.
Background & history
The island was uninhabited until households from neighbouring Sesoko Island moved across in the Meiji era to work sugar, and the settlement has been small ever since. A combined primary and junior high school still serves the children who live here, and the lighthouse at the eastern end has guided the boats through the strait for decades. A scheduled link with the main island turned a farming and fishing island into a day-trip one, and the two roles now sit side by side. The visitor's half of the island is the west-facing sand; the resident's half is everything behind it.
Before you go
- Cash
- Fares are paid at the counter in Toguchi as a single or a return. The island has no bank and no convenience store, so bring cash, water and anything you need for the day from the Motobu side.
- Good to know
- Sailings are suspended in strong wind and rough sea, and the whole day's service can be cancelled at once. Shade on the beach is limited and there is no shelter along the shore, so plan for sun and weather. The village behind the beach is a residential settlement with a working school, and its lanes are not part of the attraction.
- Another way
- Toguchi Port sits in the middle of Motobu town on the same peninsula as the aquarium road, so the island pairs naturally with a peninsula day rather than a trip of its own. Drivers reach the port on ordinary roads from Nago.
- After you get off
- Minna Port is the arrival point. The passenger waiting room stands at the quay and the village begins immediately behind it; the west-facing beach is a few minutes on foot across the neck of the island, and the lighthouse is at the eastern tip.
