Nanki Shirahama
— Japan's oldest hot-spring coast
A coastal resort on the Kii Peninsula, combining three National Scenic Beauty sites: Engetsu Island (a small islet with a round sea arch), Senjojiki (a wave-cut sandstone platform), and Sandanbeki (50-metre coastal cliffs with an explorable sea cave below).
Nanki Shirahama occupies a headland on the south Wakayama coast, where the Pacific has carved the local sandstone into a distinctive coastal landscape. The three main rock formations are spread along a few kilometres of shoreline and can be visited in a single day. Engetsu Island — 'Full-Moon Island' in Japanese — is a small rocky islet just offshore, pierced by a round sea arch roughly 9 metres in diameter. The arch frames a disc of sea and sky, and in spring and autumn the setting sun aligns with the arch on the equinoxes, drawing crowds of photographers. Senjojiki ('thousand-mat flat') is a broad wave-cut platform of sedimentary rock about 4 hectares in size, textured by erosion and exposed at tidal level. Sandanbeki ('three-tier cliff') is a two-kilometre stretch of coastal cliffs reaching about 50 metres in height, with a sea cave at their base that can be entered by elevator.
Background & history
Shirahama's hot springs are documented in texts from the Nihon Shoki (compiled 720 CE) and the Man'yoshu poetry anthology, placing them among Japan's oldest recorded hot spring sites — traditionally named together with Arima Onsen (Hyogo) and Dogo Onsen (Ehime) as the three ancient hot springs of Japan. Engetsu Island was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The Sandanbeki cave at the cliff base was reportedly used as a pirate base during the Heian period (794–1185). The sea cave is now lit and accessible to visitors by elevator.

How to enjoy it
The three sites are a short drive or taxi ride apart; the tourist bus (Town shuttle) from Shirahama Station connects them. Engetsu Island is best at sunset. Sandanbeki Cave runs on its own hours and charges a separate entry fee. Shirahama Onsen ryokan and public baths (sotoyu) are concentrated near the beach — ending the day with a hot spring bath completes the visit.
How to actually get there
- Shin-Osaka Station → Shirahama Station (JR Limited Express Kuroshio, ~2 hr 20–30 min).
- Shirahama Station → coastal sightseeing area (Meiko Bus Town Shuttle, ~20 min to Engetsu Island viewpoint).
- Circuit of Engetsu Island viewpoint → Senjojiki platform → Sandanbeki cliffs and cave (allow 3–4 hr for all three).
- Shin-Osaka Stn →(Limited Express Kuroshio)→ Shirahama Stn →(bus)→ Engetsu Island / Senjojiki / Sandanbeki
- From Shin-Osaka Station, take the JR Limited Express Kuroshio (bound for Shirahama or Shingu) to Shirahama Station — about 2 hours 20–30 minutes, fare around ¥6,000–7,000. Trains run roughly every hour. From Shirahama Station, take the Meiko Bus Town Shuttle to the coastal sightseeing stops (Engetsu Island, Senjojiki, Sandanbeki); the full circuit by bus takes 20–30 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available from the station.
- Return from Shirahama Station by Limited Express Kuroshio
- The last Limited Express from Shirahama toward Osaka runs in the late evening; check the timetable on the JR West site when you depart. The daytime frequency is roughly every hour. IC card reservations (limited express seating) are recommended in peak season (Golden Week, summer, autumn).

- Cash
- IC cards (ICOCA, Suica) are accepted on the JR limited express for the basic fare; the limited express surcharge requires a separate ticket or advance reservation. Local bus fare is paid in cash or by IC card. Sandanbeki Cave charges separate admission.
- Closing days
- Sandanbeki Cave has its own opening hours; confirm on the official site (sandanbeki.com). The equinox sunsets at Engetsu Island (around 20 March and 23 September) attract large crowds — arrive early for a good position. Summer weekends are the busiest period overall.
- Another way
- Highway bus from Osaka (Namba / OCAT) to Shirahama-sanbashi takes about 3.5–4 hours and is cheaper than the limited express. Several operators run this route.
- After you get off
- From Shirahama Station, take the Meiko Bus Town Shuttle toward the coastal sightseeing area. The first main stop, Engetsu Island viewpoint, is about 20 minutes from the station. Sandanbeki and Senjojiki are further stops on the same route.
