teamLab Planets TOKYO opened in Toyosu in July 2018 as a temporary exhibition and has since extended its run to the end of 2027. Visitors remove their shoes and socks at the entrance, then walk barefoot through a sequence of large-scale immersive rooms — several of which involve shallow pools of water with digital projections on the floor and ceiling. In January 2025 the museum expanded to about 1.5 times its original size, adding a new section called 'Forest' with more than 20 new artworks, including an athletic movement space, an educational co-creation project, and a plant-filled interactive environment. The exhibition is distinct from teamLab Borderless, which is a non-linear museum in Azabudai Hills: Planets follows a set path through its rooms.

Background & history

teamLab is an art collective founded in Tokyo in 2001, working at the intersection of art, science, technology and the natural world. Planets was conceived as a temporary exhibition when it opened in 2018, but visitor numbers — which included a Google-reported ranking among the world's five most-visited museums — led to repeated extensions. The Toyosu site is scheduled to remain open until the end of 2027.
