Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Konohana-ku, Osaka, is one of Asia's most visited theme parks. Its key attractions include the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World, a fully realised Mario Kart and Nintendo game environment that opened in 2021.
Universal Studios Japan opened in Osaka in March 2001 as Japan's first Universal Studios park. It is built on the former site of an Osaka Gas factory on the bay waterfront in Konohana-ku. The park's lineup of themed zones has expanded significantly since opening: the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, opened in 2014, is one of only three Harry Potter lands in the world. Super Nintendo World, which opened in 2021, was the world's first Nintendo-themed area in a major international theme park. The park typically draws around 15 to 16 million visitors per year and is consistently ranked among Asia's top theme parks.
Background & history
The land on which USJ stands was used for decades as an industrial site by Osaka Gas, and the park's development in 2001 was part of a wider regeneration of Osaka's bay waterfront. The park is operated by Universal Studios Japan Co., Ltd., under license from NBCUniversal. Super Nintendo World was developed in partnership with Nintendo and opened in 2021.

How to enjoy it
Purchase tickets in advance on the official USJ website — tickets are sometimes sold out on peak days (weekends, school holidays, Golden Week). Adult ticket prices vary by date (roughly ¥8,900–¥10,900; confirm on the official site). The park's opening time varies by date (typically 8:30–9:30); check the official calendar. On arrival, head directly to Super Nintendo World or the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as both zones fill up early. Universal Express Passes (paid add-on) skip the main queues and are worth considering for the busiest weekends. Allow a full day.
How to actually get there
- JR Osaka Station (Sakurajima/Yumesaki Line platforms) → Universal City Station (~15 min, frequent trains).
- Universal City Station → park main entrance (walk ~5 min along waterfront path).
- Enter and head directly to Super Nintendo World or Wizarding World of Harry Potter before queues build.
- JR Osaka Stn → Universal City Stn (JR Yumesaki Line)
- From JR Osaka Station (Sakurajima Line platforms, sometimes called the Yumesaki Line), take the direct train to Universal City Station (about 15 minutes, trains run every few minutes). From Universal City Station, walk about 5 minutes along the waterfront path to the park entrance. Total about 20 minutes from JR Osaka Station.
- Universal City Stn → JR Osaka Stn
- Return the same way. Trains run frequently until late evening. At park closing time the station can be crowded; waiting 15 minutes after the main crowd exits makes boarding easier.

- Admission tickets (roughly ¥8,900–¥10,900 for adults as of 2024-25, varying by date; confirm on official site) must be purchased in advance at the official website or at official ticket counters. IC cards (Suica, ICOCA) work on JR trains. Inside the park, most food and merchandise counters accept IC cards and major credit cards; some attractions and lockers require cash.
- Closing days
- Tickets are date-specific and non-transferable. The park can be very crowded on weekends and Japanese school holiday periods; capacity limits may apply on peak days. Height restrictions apply to some rides — check the official site before visiting with young children.
- Another way
- From Namba, take the Osaka Metro Chuo Line to Bentencho, then transfer to the JR Yumesaki Line at Nishikujo. Alternatively, a direct bus runs from major hotels and some transport hubs on certain days.
- After you get off
- Universal City Station exit faces the waterfront approach to the park. Walk straight along the bay-side path for about 5 minutes to the main entrance gate.
