The sweet spot

The castle nearby pulls most of the day-trip traffic, and this row sits a short walk east of it, so a quick tour skips it and the street stays calm even midday. There is little English-language information about it, which keeps it off the usual foreign-visitor route.

Sasayamaguchi Stn → Hon-Sasayama stop (Shinki bus toward the old town, West Exit bus stand #2, ~20 min)
Hon-Sasayama stop → Kawaramachi merchant row (walk south-east)

JR train + Shinki bus, via Sasayamaguchi: Osaka Stn →(JR Takarazuka/Fukuchiyama Line, Tambaji Rapid, ~65-70 min)→ Sasayamaguchi Stn →(Shinki bus toward the old town, ~20 min)→ Hon-Sasayama stop. From the stop, walk south-east to the merchant row. Total ~90 min. Trains and buses each run about every 30 min in the daytime — still check the day's timetable before leaving.
Return the same way: Take the Shinki bus from Hon-Sasayama back to Sasayamaguchi Stn, then the JR line to Osaka. Buses thin out in the evening — when you arrive, check the return times posted at the bus stop so you do not miss the last connection.

About the place

Kawaramachi runs east of Sasayama Castle and is lined with merchant houses built in the tsumairi style, where the triangular gable end of the roof faces the road. Most houses have a narrow front and run deep into their lots — the same plan as old Kyoto townhouses, nicknamed the 'eel's bed.' About 70% of the buildings are gable-fronted, and many still show the fine wooden lattices (senbon-goshi), small plaster-framed upper windows (mushiko-mado), and raised firebreak walls (udatsu) of an Edo-period trade quarter. Many of the houses are still lived in and used today, so the street feels like a working town rather than a museum.

How to enjoy it

Walk the full length of the street — about half a kilometre — reading the gable fronts, wooden lattices and plaster windows house by house. Combining it with a look at Sasayama Castle just to the west makes an easy half-day in the old castle town.

Background & history

The quarter took shape in the early 1600s. Sasayama Castle was built around 1609, and as part of that work the local river was moved south, opening up the ground where the merchant town was then laid out. Kawaramachi grew as the commercial heart of the castle town along the old road to Kyoto. In December 2004 the streetscape was designated a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. In 2021 the utility poles along the street were removed so the historic view would no longer be blocked by wires.

Good to know: People still live in these houses. Look from the street only, and do not enter yards or doorways.

After you get off: From the Hon-Sasayama bus stop walk south-east to the preserved street, which runs east–west — just walk its length slowly.
