About the place
Tainoura is the tourist name for a stretch of sea off Kominato, on the Pacific coast of southern Boso; as a place name it is Myo-no-ura. Red sea bream usually live in deeper water, yet here a resident population gathers near the surface. Locals link the fish to the monk Nichiren, and catching them is banned. The national designation protects the bream's habitat itself. From a pier close to Tanjoji temple, a sightseeing boat loops around the bay and stops at the bream ground. When the crew tap the hull and scatter feed, the fish surge up around the boat. Why they stay in such shallow water has still not been fully explained.
How to enjoy it
Boats run without reservations, even for one passenger. Operating hours are 8:30–15:50 from April to September, 8:30–15:20 in March and October, and 8:30–14:50 from November to February. Sailings are cancelled in rough weather, and the operator posts each day's status on its website, so check before you set out. After the cruise, walk over to Tanjoji to round out the Nichiren story.
Background & history
Nichiren, the Kamakura-period monk who founded the Nichiren school of Buddhism, was born in Kominato. Tradition says three wonders marked his birth, one of them a great shoal of sea bream at the surface. Local fishermen came to revere the fish as his incarnation and stopped catching them. Tsunamis, including the one from the Genroku earthquake of 1703, reshaped this coast, and a Nichiren priest later named its coves after the characters of the Lotus Sutra's title, Myo-no-ura among them. The habitat became a Natural Monument in 1922 and a Special Natural Monument in 1967.

The official site does not state payment methods, so carry cash.
