Minoh River Dam & Visitor Center
A 47-metre rockfill dam on the Minoh River in northern Osaka, just upstream of Minoh Falls inside a quasi-national park, with the Minoh Visitor Center at the Masakini-no-chaya park area nearby.
Above the 33-metre Minoh Falls, the paved gorge path keeps climbing to Minoh River Dam — a 47-metre earth-and-rock embankment dam (a rockfill dam, not concrete) that holds back a reservoir named Yuu-yuu Lake. Osaka Prefecture built and manages it, mainly for flood control and to sustain river flow below. The dam stands inside Meiji-no-Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park, so forest surrounds it rather than concrete. Nearby, the Masakini-no-chaya park area holds the Minoh Visitor Center, a free exhibit hall covering the park's geology, plants and wildlife. Most visitors reach the falls and turn back, but continuing uphill for another 15 minutes opens up the dam and a near-empty stretch of the park.
Why it stays quiet
The falls appear on every Osaka day-trip list; the dam above them does not. Past the waterfall there is little English signage, and the visitor lane looks like 'trailhead logistics' rather than a destination, so most day-trippers stop at the falls. Walking fifteen minutes further gets you a near-empty spot.
Background & history
Construction began in 1968 and the dam was completed in 1983 as a state-subsidised flood-control dam for the Yodo River system. Engineers chose a central clay-core rockfill design because the local ground was not solid enough for a concrete dam. In 1993 the project received an environmental award for its work to re-green and restore the surrounding slopes.

How to enjoy it
Walk the falls first, then keep going uphill about 15 minutes to the dam and visitor center (no car park at the dam — walk is the intended route). Paired with the falls it makes an easy forested half-day. The maple trees make autumn the best season.
How to actually get there
- Osaka-Umeda → Ishibashi-Handai-mae (Hankyu Takarazuka Line express, ~16 min).
- Ishibashi-Handai-mae → Minoh Stn (transfer to Hankyu Minoh Line, ~6 min).
- Minoh Stn → Minoh Falls (walk the paved gorge path uphill, ~40 min).
- Minoh Falls → the dam & visitor center (keep walking uphill, ~15 min).
- Hankyu train (transfer once) + long walk
- Osaka-Umeda →(Hankyu Takarazuka Line express, ~16 min)→ Ishibashi-Handai-mae →(transfer to Hankyu Minoh Line, ~6 min)→ Minoh Stn. Train total ~22 min. From Minoh Stn, walk the paved gorge path uphill ~40 min to Minoh Falls, then ~15 min more to the dam and visitor center. Trains are frequent (about every 10 min); the walk, not the timetable, is the effort.
- Head down while it is still light
- The valley loses daylight early even when the last train is much later, so start back down the gorge path with time to spare. Trains from Minoh Stn run frequently into the evening; check the current times at the station.
Before you go
- Cash
- The teahouses (chaya) and vending machines along the path are cash-friendly — carry coins.
- Closing days
- This is a working dam and public park. Stay on the paved road and go in the morning for the quietest walk.
- Another way
- There is no car park at the dam, so walking up from the visitor-center area is the intended route.
- After you get off
- From Minoh Falls, keep on the paved gorge road uphill about 15 min to reach the dam and the visitor center.
