Minoo Falls
Minoo Falls drops out of a wooded gorge on the northern edge of Osaka. The promenade to it is closed to vehicles the whole way up from the train terminus, so the approach is a riverside walk rather than a car park and a viewpoint.

How to actually get there
- Osaka-Umeda → Ishibashi-handai-mae (Hankyu Takarazuka Line).
- Change to the Hankyu Minoh Line → Minoh, the terminus.
- Leave the station on the north side and join the Takimichi promenade along the river.
- Follow it upstream about forty minutes to Minoo Falls, then return the same way.
- Hankyu from Osaka-Umeda, then the Takimichi on foot
- Take the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Osaka-Umeda to Ishibashi-handai-mae and change to the Minoh Line for Minoh, the terminus; the park's own guidance puts it at roughly half an hour by train from central Osaka. The Takimichi begins on the north side of the station and climbs to the falls in about forty minutes.
- Down the same promenade to Minoh Station
- There is one way down and it is the way you came. Hankyu trains leave Minoh into the evening, but the gorge darkens before the sky does, so start back with daylight in hand.
About the place
The Minoh River leaves the hills through a narrow gorge, and at the head of it the water drops 33 metres into a pool ringed by maples. The falls sit inside Meiji-no-Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park, 963 hectares of low mountain along the northern rim of the Osaka basin. From Hankyu Minoh Station a paved road called the Takimichi follows the river upstream to the falls, passing teahouses, a temple and an insect museum. Private vehicles, bicycles included, may not enter the park, and there is no parking along the promenade, so everyone arriving by train walks. The falls are on the national list of a hundred notable waterfalls.
How to enjoy it
Allow about forty minutes each way on the Takimichi. It climbs steadily but is paved the whole distance, so ordinary shoes are enough. An out-and-back from Minoh Station makes a half day, and the gorge loses its light well before the sky does, so turn around with time in hand.
Background & history
The valley was known as a place of mountain asceticism long before it was a park, and the temple partway up the road belongs to that older use. The modern designation came in 1967, when the government marked the centenary of the Meiji Restoration by creating two quasi-national parks — one at Takao west of Tokyo, one here. That pairing is why the Tokai Nature Trail runs between the two, with its western end in this valley.
Before you go
- Cash
- The park and the falls are free to enter. Carry coins for the teahouses and vending machines along the promenade.
- Good to know
- Wild monkeys live in the valley. Approaching or feeding them is prohibited by a Minoh city ordinance and carries a fine, so keep food out of sight and do not close in for photographs.
- Another way
- From Senri-Chuo on the Kita-Osaka Kyuko Line, Hankyu buses run to Minoh Station. If you drive, note that no private vehicles may enter the park and there is no parking along the promenade; the paid car parks are by the station and up on the prefectural drive-way.
- After you get off
- Leave Minoh Station on the north side and follow the paved road running upstream along the Minoh River. It leads to the falls without a turning to make.
