How to actually get there

Kyoto Station → Nagahama Station (JR Biwako Line, Special Rapid for Nagahama, ~70-80 min, direct)
Confirm the train's destination reads 'Nagahama' before boarding (not all Special Rapids go there)
Nagahama Station → Kurokabe Square (walk northeast, ~5 min)
Kurokabe Square → Yu-ichiban-gai arcade (one street north, ~2 min)

Kyoto → Nagahama by JR Special Rapid: Kyoto Station →(JR Biwako Line, Special Rapid bound for Nagahama, ~70-80 min)→ Nagahama Station. Then walk ~5 min to Kurokabe Square and one street north to the arcade. Total ~80-90 min. The train runs direct with no transfer, but not every Special Rapid goes to Nagahama, so check the front of the train shows 'Nagahama' before boarding.
Return to Kyoto (same line): Take the JR Special Rapid or Rapid from Nagahama Station back to Kyoto (~70-80 min). Daytime Nagahama trains run about once an hour, so check the return times on the platform board when you arrive.

About the place

Yu-ichiban-gai runs through Nagahama's old merchant quarter, a short walk from Kurokabe Square and one street north of the busier Otemon-dori arcade. Along the covered street you will find retro shopfronts and sweets and takeaway shops. Its standout feature is Ten no Hana, a tall vertical kaleidoscope standing roughly 8 meters. The structure uses natural daylight, and visitors turn a handle to slowly rotate the colored patterns overhead. Viewing is free.

How to enjoy it

Walk through Kurokabe Square first, then step one street north into Yu-ichiban-gai and find the kaleidoscope near the arcade entrance. Turn the handle slowly and look up. Browse the sweets shops as you continue through the arcade.

Background & history

Nagahama's historic center was revived around Kurokabe Square, where a former Meiji-era bank building nicknamed the 'black wall' was reopened as a glass gallery. That gallery anchors a district of glass shops and studios. Yu-ichiban-gai is one of the neighboring covered arcades in this old townscape, which follows the route of the former Hokkoku-kaido, an Edo-period highway connecting the region. The giant kaleidoscope has become a small landmark within the arcade.

Before you go

Cash: Some older arcade shops may take cash only, so carry a little cash. IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) work on the JR train.
Good to know: A working local arcade, so some shops keep their shutters down on weekdays. The kaleidoscope stands outdoors and can be seen any time in daylight.
Another way: Kurokabe Square, the glass district, is one street over, so you can walk both in one short loop.
After you get off: From JR Nagahama Station, walk northeast ~5 min to Kurokabe Square, then one street north into the covered arcade.
