Gokasho Kondo is a historic townscape in Higashiomi, long tied to the Omi merchants — traders who carried goods across Japan from this region. From the late Edo period into the prewar Showa era (the 1800s to the 1930s), they dealt mainly in kimono cloth, cotton, and silk; some long-established textile companies with roots here are still in business today. Behind earthen walls and boat-plank fences stand white-walled merchant houses and storehouses, and clear water runs through channels beside the lanes where colored carp drift. The town still carries the atmosphere of the era when the Omi merchants were at work.
Why it stays quiet
It is a designated preservation district, but it sits away from the express rail lines, so reaching it takes a local train plus a bus or a real walk. That effort, plus signage and displays that are mostly in Japanese, keeps the tour buses and crowds away.
Background & history
The Gokasho Kondo townscape was designated a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings on December 25, 1998, recognized for its historic landscape of merchant main houses and traditional farmhouses. In 2015 it was included in a Japan Heritage story titled 'Lake Biwa and its Waterside Scenery,' which highlights the water channels woven through daily life here. The Omi merchants were known for a business ethic summed up as 'sanpo yoshi' — good for the seller, good for the buyer, and good for society — and Gokasho was one of the towns they came from.

How to enjoy it
The district is small and best explored slowly on foot, following the water channels between the walled houses. A combined ticket covers the three open merchant houses. Stop first at the Kondo Machinami Preservation Exchange Center — a small local visitor center — to get oriented before you walk. Merchant-house entry fees and rural bus fares are cash only, so carry coins and small notes.

- Notogawa Stn → Plaza Sanpo Yoshi stop (Ohmi Railway bus toward Yokaichi, ~10 min)

- JR Biwako Line + Ohmi Railway bus
- Kyoto Stn →(JR Biwako Line, Special Rapid, ~45 min)→ Notogawa Stn →(Ohmi Railway bus toward Yokaichi, ~10 min)→ Plaza Sanpo Yoshi stop → ~5 min walk to the merchant houses. Total ~60 min. The bus runs roughly 1-2 times an hour in the daytime and thins out early and late — check the day's timetable before you leave.

- From the Plaza Sanpo Yoshi bus stop it is about a 5 min walk on flat paved lanes to the merchant houses and water channels.
