The sweet spot

It looks like a plain roadside on the way to Hayama's busier beaches, so most visitors pass it by, and the view only stands out when the sun is low. There is little English travel information about it, which keeps it off the main tourist route.

How to actually get there

Shinagawa Stn → Zushi Stn (JR Yokosuka Line, direct, ~50-60 min).
Zushi Stn → Shinnase bus stop (Keikyu bus Zu-12/Zu-11, coastal loop toward Hayama, ~16 min).
From the bus stop, cross to the seawall and look offshore at the red torii.

JR train + Keikyu bus: Shinagawa Stn →(JR Yokosuka Line, direct, ~50-60 min)→ Zushi Stn →(Keikyu bus route Zu-12 or Zu-11, coastal loop toward Hayama/Isshiki, ~16 min)→ Shinnase bus stop. Total about 70-80 min. Buses run often (roughly every 15-20 min in the daytime).
Return by the same coastal bus: Take the same coastal loop bus back toward Zushi Stn. Buses run into the evening but get less frequent after sunset — check the return times posted at the bus stop when you arrive.

About the place

Shinnase is a residential stretch of the Hayama seafront. It has a low seawall road and a small white bus waiting-room that locals have turned into a favourite photo spot. Just offshore sits Najima, a bare rock topped with a red torii belonging to Morito Shrine. Beyond it stands the Hayama Lighthouse, and on clear days the red torii, the lighthouse, and Mount Fuji line up in a single row across the water. There is no ticket to buy — it is simply a coast that frames that alignment when the sky is clear.

How to enjoy it

Come toward sunset, when the light drops low over the water and turns the torii a deeper red. Winter tends to bring the clearest air for seeing Mount Fuji. The torii, the lighthouse, and Fuji only line up on clear days, so a bright evening makes the short walk along the seawall especially rewarding.

Background & history

The red torii marks Najima, a sacred islet about 700 metres offshore that holds Ryujin-gu, a sub-shrine of Morito Shrine dedicated to the dragon sea-deity. Morito Shrine itself was founded in 1180 — tradition credits the warlord Minamoto no Yoritomo. A footbridge and ferry once reached the rock, but both are gone; in late 2024 the shrine built a worship platform on the shore so visitors can face the torii and Mount Fuji through its own gates from land. The nearby Hayama Lighthouse was built in memory of Ishihara Yujiro, a mid-20th-century Japanese film actor and yachtsman.

Before you go

Cash: You can tap an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) on the bus. Carry a little cash too, as the small cafes along the shore may not take cards.
Good to know: This is a lived-in neighbourhood and a working shore, not a tourist site — keep your voice down and stay off private property along the seafront.
Another way: You can also walk: it is about 15 quiet minutes along the water from Morito Shrine to Shinnase.
After you get off: From the Shinnase bus stop, the red torii is straight out across the water. Cross to the seawall and look offshore.
